How To Make Your BBQ Season Happy And Healthy | Healthy Summer.

Summer is almost here (yay) and that means bbq season is upon us. Today I have a few tips to make your bbq season both enjoyable and healthy.

1. Choose meat that is lean. Try something a little different with chicken flavoured with herbs or grill some fish. If you are having steaks ensure they are no bigger than the palm of your hand. Limit the number of sausages you eat as they are really high in unhealthy fats and salt.

2. Make lots of salad and keep them exciting by experimenting with different flavours. Vegetables sometimes need a bit of help to make them popular. Some of my favourite salads are steak and quinoa salad, honey mustard chicken salad, and south-west chicken salad

3. Include vegetables in every way you can. Maybe thread some vegetables onto skewers and grill them on the bbq. Another idea is to include vegetables sticks and cherry tomatoes in your pre dinner snacks.

4. Choose healthy dips like salsa, hummus, tzatziki and home made guacamole. Avoid creamy dips these tend to be high in kilojoules. Check out my salsa and guacamole recipes for inspiration.

5. Make water your drink of choice. To keep it interesting why not brew an ice tea (avoid adding sugar) or flavour some soda water with fresh fruit.

6. When filling your plate at dinner time section it off so that you have 1/2 a plate of vegetables, 1/4 plate of meat and 1/4 plate of grains or potato.

7. When dessert time comes around ask yourself 'Am I still hungry?' if then answer is no you don't need dessert. If the answer is yes why not just ask for a small slice so that you still get to enjoy it without over indulging.

8. Lastly be safe with your food. Keep cold food cold and hot food hot to avoid giving your guests food poisoning.

Enjoying a bbq with friends and family should be a happy time. I hope these tips will help you to make wise food choices without taking the fun away.
