Treat Yourself (you have my permission)

Is it possible to have a chocolate cake that's healthy? Yes! The Healthy Chef's Naked Chocolate cake!!

I really wanted to post a delicious recipe today but alas being in America means a lack of specific ingredients and equipment.

I'm here today to tell you it is ok to have a treat! In fact it is important that you let yourself have a treat every so often.

Let's be honest temptation is everywhere and it is perfectly fine to give in every now and then. Everything in moderation is how the saying goes. You have to be able to live in a world where chocolate exists and you need to be able to get along.

You know the saying 'you always want what you can't have'? This is what happens when you cut out all treat foods completely! You want them so so badly! It is like when a child isn't allowed to eat sweets or junk food when they are at home and they go to a birthday party where there is an abundance of treats and they can't control them selves. If you have been depriving yourself of your favourite food because it is against the 'rules' of your diet, then when confronted with said food you can be tempted to binge.

There is so much guilt around treats and breaking the 'rules' of a diet. This guilt can be responsible for destroying your motivation. It can lead to a spiral of self doubt and result in you letting go of all the healthy choices you have been making. It is hard to change these feelings of guilt associated with these foods. Let me put your mind at ease, you are not a bad person for enjoying something you like in fact there are no 'good' or 'bad' foods. There are foods you shouldn't eat all the time but that doesn't make them bad.

Lets talk about a different way of enjoying your favourite (not so healthy) food. Allow yourself to eat this food occasionally, when you are really craving it or when it is a special occasion. Eat it slowly, enjoy the texture and the taste. Food is about enjoyment as much as it is about nutrition. When you are feeling tempted to finish the whole chocolate cake or packet of chips remind yourself that these foods aren't going any where, they won't be disappearing off the supermarket shelves, you don't have to stock up to prepare for weeks or years of deprivation.

After writing this post I think I will have to share one of my favourite family chocolate recipes.

Let me know your favourite treat foods in the comments!

So hard to choose but I think my favourite are Tim Tams.
